Do you consider showing food values cheating on a first play through?

    Posted: 19 Feb 2021 04:54 PM PST

Playing DST with a few friends for the first time and we have no clue what food does in terms of hunger/sanity/health, do you think we should use a mod like insight or show me to show the food values or play vanilla?

    DedServer autosave.

    Posted: 19 Feb 2021 10:14 PM PST

Is there any way for me to set my server to autosave whenever a player leaves? I have a personal server set up in a back room that is an old 775 socket that likes to randomly restart. And when the server restarts you can lose a whole day's progress if they didn't stay on till the end of the day.. So I would like to try and fix that lol. TIA

    DST - New player impressions

    Posted: 19 Feb 2021 09:46 PM PST

    Experience so far:

Server 1 (wife and I learning the game): Got to Summer, poorly positioned base with a lot of Moongeese in Spring, wiped and didn't revert to a few days earlier

Server 2 (wife and I going back in): Made it to Summer and died in the Oasis desert. For some idiotic reason, multiple people fishing does not increase the speed at which you get the blueprints, but decreases the frequency of caught stuff. In any case, it was an ok experience.

Server 3: Wife and I back at it again, we are in Winter and we just killed Deerclops. Server still going.

Server 4: My own world, currently at end of summer after killing Antlion (with a few resets)

Server 5: Wife's solo server, she is in Fall after killing Bearger.

    Combat

By biggest gripe with the game is combat. I am sure there are a few SC2 pros among you who can perfectly micro and never get hit. For someone who never played RTSs and who enjoys quality of life 3rd party mods that show the health of stuff, fighting is either a walk in the park (with a manageable number of enemies in an OK area) OR a fucking clusterfuck e.g. the Antlion fight.

A lot of the combat seems reduced to "spam F and a direction key to kite."

    Motivation?

People will blindly chase objectives the game sets for them, and I find the lack of a "story mode" in DST quite baffling given that it seems that it existed in Don't Starve. On the flipside, you don't seem to be able to have MP in DS and its story modes, which is ????

Basically I can probably set my own goals after some research, but it would be nice to have some... guidance... on what feels satisfying to do.

    Core game loop

The lack of extrinsic motivation kinda hurts the core game loop, especially in my solo server. Should I be building my base, or should I be fighting Boss X.

Boss fights are not that great (after watching tutorials)

I am sure the first person to figure out a new idea in this game had fun doing that. Unfortunately I am coming in... a lot late to the party, and I feel that "ruining" the game by learning too much of it without "figuring" any of it myself is taking quite a bit of enjoyment away from the experience. At the same time a lot of the stuff is like the question "who figured out you can milk the cow, and what were they doing there" - it seems there are a few optimal ways to fight bosses.

I guess it was pretty cool when I figured out that spider nests + ice = infinite food, so I should farm spider nests... but then I had to look up how to relocate them since it wasn't immediately obvious what I'd need to do, and destroying a nest seemed like getting rid of my food source.

An example of convoluted boss fights are the Bee Queen fight or the Dragonfly fight. Both seem to take a non-trivial amount of preparation, and both seem thoroughly unmanageable for a solo player WITHOUT that preparation. As far as a "hunter-gatherer" mentality goes, sure it makes sense that you'd transform the terrain or bring allies to fight a dangerous monster. At the same time, if you DIDN'T do that, what other ways are there to accomplish that goal. Where is the potential for self-expression and problem-solving?

    What actually works

The "Farmville"/Stardew Valley experience is pretty nice and the urgency of the first Fall and Winter are nice. The resource, crafting and exploration systems all work.

The problem for me is that the issues really start compounding after that initial 30 day/4 hour period where survival is not as much of an issue as motivation, and there the combat shortcomings and lack of self-expression possibilities really drag the game down for me.

Veterans: What am I missing? Or is this the case of "this game is not for everybody?"

    Clueless and considering getting this.

I'd like to get a game for me and my boyfriend a game to play together. He's 18 and seems to like survival games and I'm 20 and fine with most games with a large mod base. I know barley anything about this game and I'd hate to waste money on some children's game if that's what this is.

    Discussion - Boss Health/Player Temperature

    Posted: 19 Feb 2021 10:48 PM PST

What do you guys think about some form of late game magic item that would be similar to (or even just) a blow dart that when it comes in contact with an entity, it would display its health? Maybe there would need to be a special type of helmet requiring an assortment of gems, gears, and ore to craft, to even be able to see the information the dart is relaying?

As in regards to player temperature, I know there is those, "Ambient Air Thermometer" things that will tell you at your base, but again, do y'all believe a clothing item or armor piece would be well suited to let you know? Maybe even an equippable tool?

I personally think this would be a good addition, since Klei has a giant roadmap laid out. At least, in my oh-so humble opinion. What do you guys think? 🤔 💭

Me and a buddy have sailed almost all the ocean, and found at least 45 messages in a bottle, yet we haven't seen Pearl. We haven't even found the lunar island. Any suggestions or ideas? Thanks! PS4

    I got a question

    Posted: 19 Feb 2021 09:40 AM PST

So the game GUI feels smooth but the game itself fells and looks choppy, the GUI FPS is over 60 and the game looks like it's below 60

I got a pretty powerful system i3 9100F and GTX 1650. I don't think my system has a problem, I can run pretty much anything else.

Does anyone know how to solve the issue?
