How do you survive "forever"

I have over 200 hours in Dont Starve but I always struggle to survive in the third season. I play mostly RoG so maybe playing standard would be better, but who should I be picking if I plan on surviving forever? What are some strategies I should use to not die after Winter from the next giant? What should I be focusing on early on to help me survive later? Questions like that. I could probably survive for a long time in the normal version since there aren't the extra giants to deal with nor do I have to manage overheating.
