Dont Starve is an amazing gaming experience.

    Posted: 18 Sep 2020 11:09 PM PDT

I am kinda new. I've known about this game for years, and have played it a little. I just now bought it, and Its honestly amazing. I'm on the edge of my seat the entire time. I dont know what to expect at all. Its such a great feeling to have such a genuine sense of wonder and fear at what's happening in the world around you. I'm currently on day 16, and loving it!

Could you maybe drop some non spoilery tips, like about food and stuff, also?

    Overheating bug?

    Posted: 18 Sep 2020 04:56 PM PDT

I think I've stumbled across a bug, I'm a rather new player though so I wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this.

So I started a new world and I was going about exploring on day 5. I found a wormhole and jumped in and ended up in a desert, I started to overheat so I came back through. It's now day 7 and my character is still overheating even though it's autumn, I'm wearing a grass hat and a summer frest.

    Anyone have any suggestions/ help?

Is there a way to get rid of or reduce the audio and visual changes from going insane?

    Posted: 18 Sep 2020 02:26 PM PDT

Like the title sais, I'm wondering if there's a way to make going insane less visually and aduitorily annoying, since it's usually good to be insane anyways.

    Base checklist with all DLCs

    Posted: 18 Sep 2020 01:42 PM PDT

Warning: this is going to be a long post. Tried to format it best I could with what reddit had in store, but if any of it bleeds together, please do let me know.

My initial goal was just putting together a list of what should be built for a successful outside base as I was trying to leave the slanty shanty behind (it unloads the world around it, keeping you from farming most things), then I've realized that a) this could be useful for others, too and b) I'm still unsure about a lot of things in this game.

This is for RoG/SW with worldhopping, in Hamlet, it's still better to live inside your house in my opinion - humid season is a pain in the ass, you have limited farming options, and there isn't enough to do there to warrant estabishing larger bases. I'm not big on building gigantic settlements and would rather run around exploring while accomplishing things with the least amount of effort, so I really wanted to take advantage of every toy the different DLCs offer.

As for the basics, things that every base should have:

    • 4 Crockpots - quick cooking
    • 1-2 Ice Boxes - one for ingredients, maybe another for cooked food
    • Birdcage - gimme all your eggs, baby
    • loads of chests for storage
    • Obsidian Fire Pit and Endothermic Fire Pit - light, cooking stuff, warming up, cooling down
    • Ice Flingomatic - extinguishing fires, better to be prepared
    • Oscillating Fan - drying off quickly
    • Lamp Post - so you don't have to keep the fire going all the time and can find your base easily
    • Alchemy Engine and Shadow Manipulator - obvious
    • Slanty Shanty - see below
    • 'The Sty' Oddities Emporium - exchanging useless things for oincs and access to a couple of good items
    • Curly Tails Mud Spa - easy access to antivenom and mushrooms
    • The Flying Pig Arcane Shop - night armor for 20 oincs? sold.

This can all fit under a single Ice Flingomatic, and it really should, since shit happens. Flingos extinguish fire pits too, so they'll be probably placed outside flinging radius in RoG, but at least SW doesn't have smoldering. No twigs, no grass, that's what lureplants are for, and no goddamn berry bushes, there are so much better options when it comes to food. Probably gonna skip Magic Flower too, planting it in the middle of the base would be good for sanity, but risky since it also serves as a Meat Effigy, lowering your health and resurrecting the player... if it feels like it, since as far as I know, it's buggy as hell. (and it looks like there aren't any mods that remove the resurrecting behavior, sadly)

    Inside the Slanty Shanty:

    • Drying Rack - I personally only use one if any, since I'm not a fan of Jerky (Bacon and Eggs has the same shelf life and is easier to mass produce, while Surf 'n' Turf is way better for sanity)
    • Ice Machine 3000 - fits there perfectly, no danger of melting and produces all ice at the same time(?)
    • Shelves - storing items you really don't want to go searching for
    • Skyworthy - hopping between worlds
    • Meat Effigy and emergency supplies - when shit hits the fan

In a wider radius around the base:

    • Ice Flingomatics and Lightning Rods - required, because things getting set on fire isn't fun
    • Elephant Cacti - panic room against hound/crocodog attacks, farming dragoons (monster meat and hearts to refuel moggles), prime apes (morsels), spiders (monster meat, glands, silk), cactus spikes to renew log suits, and... whatever you want, those things are extremely powerful
    • all the Coffee from the Volcano, which is something like 140+ plants, only in SW to be harvested during dry season repeatedly, because fertilizing after each harvest can eat a dick, all hail bundling wraps
    • 4 Bee Boxes and 24 or so flowers - honey for Honey Ham and Coffee. 4 should probably be enough, that's 20+ honey/day
    • 2 Fish Farm - sanity with Surf 'n' Turf or damn near infinite healing with fishsticks -- in RoG, get a merm farm going instead for fish, and maybe a few bunnyman for pierogi
    • Lureplant farm - twigs and grass
    • Tar Extractor - lots of fuel in SW, maybe a Beefalo herd for the same purpose in RoG

The bees and lureplant farm should be protected by flingos and lightning rods, since they're quite flammable, while Coffee and Elephant Cacti doesn't care about fire.

Now, for the questions concerning this whole thing:

    • Is there anything you feel like is missing, or something I'm not seeing?
    • Is the Rainometer worth it? Never used it, does it actually tell you when it's about to start raining in a useful manner, or only when you're already getting drenched?
    • How far away should bee boxes be from your base? Is one screen or so enough, or will it lead to angry bees giving you a surprise visit every so often?
    • Are there any good guides on how to build a proper lureplant farm, with 1-2 Lureplants?

    Pig facts

    Posted: 18 Sep 2020 01:23 PM PDT

1:you can put any hat in the game on pigmen and the hat won't lose durability unless the pig is damaged, you can get the hat back but only by killing the pig or giving it a new hat 2:pigmen can help chop trees and this helps preserve axe durability 3:if you put a football helmet thulesite crown or bone helm the effects and defense buff will apply to it,which can lead to more powerful pig teams
